1918年4月14日,正是在这座老屋，毛泽东蔡和森等人发起成立了新民学会。一群热血的爱国青年们常常聚在这里，在黑暗中探索中国的出路在哪里。

新民学会成立后，毛泽东主持创办《湘江评论》，响应五四运动，成立长沙文化书社与俄罗斯研究会，组织学会会员赴法勤工俭学，提出民众大联合，宣传十月革命。新民学会是中国共产党成立前后，最有影响力的团体之一。

“毛蔡寄庐流芳千载，新民学会建党先声。”新民学会成为中国共产党的“建党先声”，不仅最早提出了“中国共产党”这一名称，学会成员中更是有37名成为了第一批入党的共产党员，为中国共产党的创立和发展培养了骨干人才。
