朱德以红军总司令名义在彝族地区发布《中国工农红军布告》指出：中国工农红军，解放弱小民族；一切彝汉平民，都是兄弟骨肉。可恨四川军阀，压迫彝人太毒；苛捐杂税重重，又复妄加杀戮。红军万里长征，所向势如破竹；今已来到川西，尊重彝人风俗。军纪十分严明，不动一丝一粟；粮食公平购买，价钱交付十足。凡我彝人群众，切莫怀疑畏缩；赶快团结起来，共把军阀驱逐。设立彝人政府，彝族管理彝族；真正平等自由，再不受人欺辱。希望努力宣传，将此广播西蜀。这篇布告收入《朱德选集》。
1944年5月22日
毛泽东在陕甘宁边区工厂职工代表会议举行的招待会上讲话，论述了经济工作的重要性，强调共产党是要努力于中国的工业化的。讲话指出：边区的工业，其数目虽小，但它所包含的意义却非常远大，是最有发展前途、最富于生命力、足以引起一切变化的力量。要打倒日本帝国主义，必需有工业。要中国的民族独立有巩固的保障，就必需工业化。我们共产党是要努力于中国的工业化的。日本帝国主义为什么敢于这样地欺负中国，就是因为中国没有强大的工业，它欺侮我们落后。因此，消灭这种落后，是我们全民族的任务。老百姓拥护共产党，是因为我们代表了民族与人民的要求。但是，如果我们不能解决经济问题，如果我们不能建立新式工业，如果我们不能发展生产力，老百姓就不一定拥护我们。在抗日战争中，共产党领导的军队抗击了百分之五十八的敌军，百分之九十的伪军，这方面我们是有经验有成绩的。但是，对于经济工作，尤其是工业，我们还不大懂，可是这一门又是决定一切的，是决定军事、政治、文化、思想、道德、宗教这一切东西的，是决定社会变化的。因此，所有的共产党员都应该学习经济工作，其中许多人应该学习工业技术。如果我们共产党员不关心工业，不关心经济，也不懂别的什么有益的工作，对于这些一无所知，一无所能，只会做一种抽象的“革命工作”，这种“革命家”是毫无价值的。我们应该反对这种空头“革命家”，学习使中国工业化的各种技术知识。这篇讲话收入《毛泽东文集》第三卷。
1983年5月22日
邓小平在会见毛里求斯政府代表团时谈到中国经济问题说：中国人口众多，经济比较落后。每年达到就业年龄的就有七八百万之多，解决这么多人的就业问题是不容易的。当然，我们的就业问题和欧美、日本的情况不一样。搞单一经济有很多问题不好办，很难解决就业问题，很难摆脱世界经济危机带来的影响。我国农村过去十分贫困，主要原因之一就是搞“以粮为纲”。当前，我国农村实行生产责任制，实行因地制宜、多种经营的方针，调动了农民的生产积极性，仅仅用了三年多的时间，农村面貌就大大改观，大多数农民开始摆脱贫困，成效是显著的。粮食不仅没有减产，反而有较大的增加。在谈到中国发展的历史经验时说：我们最根本的一条经验是一切从实际出发。任何国家、任何地区都有自己的特点，我们应该根据自己的特点制订本国的方针、政策、目标和计划。过去，我们没有这样做，犯错误就犯在这里；这几年成功，原因也在这里。别人的经验可以借鉴，但必须根据自己的实际情况来决定自己的事情。

习近平在同外国专家座谈时强调，任何一个民族、任何一个国家都需要学习别的民族、别的国家的优秀文明成果。中国要永远做一个学习大国，不论发展到什么水平都虚心向世界各国人民学习，以更加开放包容的姿态，加强同世界各国的互容、互鉴、互通，不断把对外开放提高到新的水平。他指出，中华民族历来具有尚贤爱才的优良传统。现在，我们比历史上任何时期都更需要广开进贤之路、广纳天下英才。要实行更加开放的人才政策，不唯地域引进人才，不求所有开发人才，不拘一格用好人才，在大力培养国内创新人才的同时，更加积极主动地引进国外人才特别是高层次人才，热忱欢迎外国专家和优秀人才以各种方式参与中国现代化建设。要积极营造尊重、关心、支持外国人才创新创业的良好氛围，对他们充分信任、放手使用，让各类人才各得其所，让各路高贤大展其长。他强调，文明交流互鉴，首先是人的交流互鉴。加强国际人才交流合作，有利于我们积极借鉴世界各国优秀文明成果，也有助于推动中华文明创造性转化和创新性发展。更重要的是，这种交流有利于推动不同文明相互尊重，推动世界各国人民相互理解。
